The mandible’s function as a primary anatomical structure in speech and eating and the reconstruction
in the mandible is commonly encountered as a result from resection of benign or malignant lesions,
trauma, or osteoradionecrosis. Mandibular defects can be classified according to location and extent, as
well as involvement of mucosa, skin, and tongue. In such conditions maxillofacial surgery is considered as
a reconstructive surgery when the treatment is necessary to restore function or alignment of structures
in the head and neck. The mandible surgery is ideally performed within days of primary accident and
should not exceed two weeks from the time of injury
In case of facial reconstruction the surgeons have training and skills to repair the facial features that are absent or deformed . The facial reconstruction mainly includes reconstruction that is deformed due to birth defects, craniofacial deformities, head and neck cancer resection and trauma. The corrections of facial fractures are generally due to motor vehicle accidents, fights, domestic violence, athletic violence, animal bites etc. Traumatic facial fractures frequently involve the jawbone, cheekbone, the eye socket, or the brow and are realignment by facial reconstruction procedure. .
