The surgical procedure to reduce the size of the labia minora or the flaps of skin on either side of the
vaginal opening is called labiaplasty. The surgery involves shortening or reshaping of the vaginal lips, a bit
like shortening a hem on a dress. It is usually performed by a gynecologist or plastic surgeon . The
procedure takes around 1 - 2 hours. You could be discharged to go home the same day and there may be
cases where an overnight stay is required.
In Labiaplasty the inner vaginal lips can be reduced in size and reshaped back again. The procedure could be done in two ways which mainly includes reducing the excess tissue along the edges of the labia. The first methods includes trimming along the inner folds until the labia no longer protrudes. The other method is cutting out a ‘V’ shaped wedge of tissue from the underneath of the labia, which are then sewn back together. This method leaves the front of the labia unchanged, making the evidence of surgery less noticeable.
