Gender reassignment surgery, sex reassignment surgery is a procedure that changes genital organs from one gender to another. Gender reassignment surgery is also known as gender identity disorder (GID) and is identified by physicians, psychiatrists and psychologists as a condition in which a person has been born one gender, usually on the basis of their sex at birth, but identifies as belonging to another gender.
In case of gender reassignment surgery there is a permanent change to a patient’s sexual identity and it is not reversible. A careful and accurate diagnosis is essential for treatment and can be made only as part of a long term diagnostic process involving a multidisciplinary specialty approach that includes an extensive case history; gynecological, endocrinological and urological examination, and a clinical psychiatric examination. During male to female surgery, the testicles and most of the penis are removed and the urethra is cut shorter. Some of the skin is used to fashion a largely functional vagina. In case of female to male surgery, the breasts, uterus and ovaries are removed that allows sexual sensation.
